Understanding the “Why” Behind Young People’s Behaviour

“LEARNING TOGETHER” is a monthly column where Impact Community ACADEMY Founding Principal, Jenna Auer, explores key educational topics. This month, Jenna discusses how understanding the reasons behind young people's behaviours can transform reactions into empathetic responses, fostering emotional and social growth.

Teachers witness a wide range of student behaviours every day - and one truth always stands out: behaviour is a language, it’s a form of communication. Whether it’s in the classroom or at home, every response has a reason behind it. The key is taking a moment to ask “Why?” before we react.

When a child presents with negative behaviours, it’s often not about defiance, but a deeper need. It might be anxiety, frustration, a learning challenge, or simply a need for attention and connection. By pausing to understand the root cause, we move from reacting to responding with empathy and purpose.

Think about a young person who constantly disrupts class. The easy route is punishment. But what if we try to find out what’s going on beneath the surface, we might discover they’re feeling overwhelmed, struggling to keep up, or going through something difficult at home. A supportive conversation can lead to real solutions - whether it’s offering a listening ear, teaching a new learning strategy, or simply ensuring they know someone cares.

Parents are powerful partners in this process too. At home, when a child shows challenging behaviour, it’s a chance to connect rather than correct. At times this is easier said than done with the chaos of being a parent but simply asking how they’re feeling or what they need can open doors to communication and trust. It tells the young person: You matter. Your feelings are real. You’re not alone.

This approach is core to our mission at Impact ACADEMY. By looking beneath the behaviour, we help our students grow not only academically, but emotionally and socially. It’s how we build resilience, compassion, and confidence in our young people.

In both schools and homes, understanding the “Why” changes everything. It creates environments where children feel safe, seen, and supported. And that’s when true learning - and lasting growth - can begin.
