Teenagers today are growing up in a world that never switches off. Notifications, pressure, comparison - it’s constant. At Impact Community ACADEMY, we see firsthand how this affects young people’s ability to feel calm, confident and focused. While we can’t control the world around them, we can help them build a strong routine.
It might sound simple (maybe even boring!) but routine is one of the most underrated tools for wellbeing. A calm, screen-free morning can help a teenager feel grounded before the chaos of the day begins. It doesn’t have to be complicated; it could be sitting quietly with a morning coffee and toast – not doing a million things at once. It could be blasting a favourite song and having a dance to start the day with joy. Or simply thinking about three things to be grateful for when getting out of bed. These small habits shape how they show up in the world.
Evenings matter just as much. Screen time before bed is proven to disrupt sleep and increase anxiety. Supporting teenagers to wind down without devices – through reading, journaling or warm caffeine-free tea, can help their brain reset, recharge and actually sleep.
Here’s the thing: teenagers are watching us. When adults model healthy routines - putting phones away at dinner, winding down before bed, starting the day with intention - young people notice. They’re far more likely to follow through when they see it lived, not just preached.
At Impact ACADEMY, we support these habits with practical help. Our Breakfast Club, supported by Kellogg’s, offers a free, healthy start to the day. Lunch is also prepared daily, and we’re building partnerships to provide pantry and frozen food items to families who need extra support. But food is just one piece of the puzzle.
The overall goal is helping young people feel calm, capable, and cared for at home, at school, and in the community. Because when they feel at ease, they can focus on themselves and their learning journey.
These young people are our next generation of adults. The habits they build now will shape how they live, work and care for others in the future.
If you’re a parent, carer, teacher, grandparent or even a neighbour, know that your example matters. And if you’re reading this thinking, maybe I need a better routine too, you’re not alone. Start the day strong, end it well. It’s good for all of us!
