Champions of Change
In Social and Community Studies, students explored advocacy and legal literacy through real-world learning. Last term, they wrote persuasive letters to Mayor Helen Blackburn, advocating for improved fishing infrastructure for Bundaberg youth. This task helped students understand the power of their voices and how to communicate ideas effectively using evidence and formal channels.
As part of Unit 2, students are diving into Queensland laws and transforming their research into youth-friendly presentations. By exploring a law of their choice, they’re uncovering its purpose, understanding the consequences, and identifying available support systems. This hands-on investigation is helping them sharpen their research, literacy, and critical thinking skills, empowering them to become our very own Legal Eagles!
Data Detectives
This term in Mathematics, students stepped into the role of Data Detectives, uncovering how surveys and statistics influence real-world decisions. They explored the Australian Census and discovered how data drives funding at national, state, and local levels, while also learning how statistics can be misinterpreted or misused.
To bring their learning to life, students took on a hands-on data collection challenge at Bundy Bowl and Leisure Centre. Armed with scores from two bowling games, they created pie charts, bar graphs, and dot plots, then put their knowledge to the test in our classroom twist on Family Feud - Class Clash!
And of course, the ultimate challenge remains: who will rise to dethrone the reigning Impact ACADEMY bowling champion - our very own teacher, Nicole?
Nature’s Classroom Meets Goal Busters
This term in Sport and Recreation, students have embraced the outdoors through bush walking, nature photography, meditation, and creative teamwork activities in local parks. These experiences have not only boosted fitness but also deepened students’ connection to nature and highlighted the wellbeing benefits of spending time outside. Building on this momentum, our Goal Busters initiative linked Mathematics with physical activity, challenging students to reach 5,000 steps during school hours. Whether walking laps, playing volleyball, or cheering each other on, the school yard has come alive with laughter, teamwork, and a contagious energy that’s driving everyone forward.
Community Connections
This term, students completed their S.E.L.F. accreditation and began Career Education, earning another QCE credit. They’ve heard inspiring stories from guest speakers including Triple M’s Jacob, El, and Abby Sky, Nick Larter from Legal Aid, Brittany Duncan from Bundaberg Police, and Michael Anderson from BDS Mechanical Repairs. These sessions sparked curiosity and highlighted the power of connection and community in shaping career pathways.
Everyone Has a Story, and Stories Should Be Told
In English this term, students explored biographies of individuals who’ve overcome adversity. Through timelines and reflective writing, they built literacy skills while gaining insight into resilience, hope, and the power of storytelling—connecting meaningfully with others’ experiences and their own.
Master Chefs
Every Monday afternoon, students take turns preparing snacks for their classmates using everyday ingredients kindly donated to the academy. From Chocolate Weet-Bix slice to Strawberry smoothies, students have been learning how to turn simple items into delicious treats. Alongside cooking, they’re building important life skills like time management, food safety, and following recipes, while learning about basic nutrition and how to make balanced choices. The kitchen is full of laughter, teamwork, and plenty of “Yums!” during break time.
