Learning Together: Respect starts with belonging

September 25, 2026

Respect is a word we hear often in schools, workplaces, sporting clubs and communities.

At its core, respect is recognising the dignity, value and worth of every person.

One of the most powerful ways respect is experienced is through belonging. When people feel accepted, included and valued for who they are, they are more likely to contribute positively to the communities around them. They are more likely to feel safe, connected and able to grow.

For young people, a sense of belonging can have a significant impact on wellbeing, engagement and learning. Students who feel seen and heard are more likely to build positive relationships, develop confidence and actively participate in school life.

Belonging is not created through one large gesture. It is built through small actions that happen every day. Listening without judgement, using inclusive language, showing kindness, welcoming new people and standing up for others all send a powerful message: you matter here.

Importantly, creating a culture of respect and belonging is not the responsibility of schools alone. Every member of a community contributes to the culture that others experience. Students, families, staff and the wider community all play a role in shaping environments where people feel valued and supported.

As conversations about respect continue across our region, we have an opportunity to reflect on what respect looks like in practice. Respect is not simply something we teach. It is something we model through our actions, attitudes and interactions with others. It is also about creating environments where people feel they genuinely belong, regardless of their background, experiences or challenges.

At Impact Community ACADEMY, fostering belonging is central to our approach. We strive to create an environment where every young person feels welcomed, respected and connected. We know that when students feel they belong, they are more willing to engage, overcome challenges and achieve their potential.

Strong communities are built when people know they matter. When respect starts with belonging, we create environments where everyone feels valued, supported and able to thrive.
